I spent an hour today trying to assist a fellow developer with debugging why Internet Explorer 6 suddenly started throwing the dreadfully hard to fix ‘Operation Aborted’ errors on page load. After stripping the page down one piece at a time, he was able to determine that having the following code in the head…

<base target=”_top”>

…while using gMapEz on the page was causing the error to be thrown. I immediately tried it on the Salem Clinic Locations page, and sure enough I saw the same behavior. Whether this is due to a change in the Google Maps API javascript, or an IE6 update, or the position of the moon is still unknown.

I hate developing for IE sometimes.

Update #1

I did some more googling on the issue. It doesn’t appear to be directly related to the gMapEz framework, but the Google Maps API. One blogger called the IE6 handling of the <base> tag ‘dodgy at best’ and directly noted that you should remove it to get Google Maps working in your page reliably.

Shaun Inman, the developer of a PHP stats package I really like, has noted the same behavior in general and has some other workarounds on his blog.

As I’m developing software, I need a lot of screen real estate and access to more then one OS for browser testing. To that end I have an XP desktop and a Vista laptop. Up until today, I’ve had a keyboard/mouse combo for the desktop and used the built in kb/mouse on the laptop. I have to stretch to reach my laptop, so it isn’t terribly convenient.

I figured that somebody must have solved this problem with a software KVM. A quick Google search turned up Synergy, a free software KVM that allows you to use one KB/Mouse across multiple PCs at one time. It didn’t say anything about mixing XP and Vista, but I thought I’d give it a shot. Here is how I set it up.

The desktops’ machine name is ’scfox’, the laptop is called ‘ToshibaLaptop’. Genius huh? Anyways. Install the program on both of the machines that you want to connect to. On the primary machine, select the second radio button labeled ‘Share this computer’s keyboard and mouse (server)’.

Once you’ve done that, click configure.

Add the machine names that you are working with to the ‘Screens’ list. My laptop is physically to the right of my desktop, so I setup ‘Links’ for both machines.

Once I’ve saved the configurations, I started Synergy on the desktop in server mode then minimized it to the taskbar. I then started Synergy on the laptop and told it to connect to scfox. I can now share on mouse and keyboard between the two machines. This allows me to test on IE7/FF3 on the laptop, and IE6/FF2 on the desktop all from the same keyboard and mouse combo.

Yeah, that’s my office. Nice huh?

I’ve been working on a public website over these last few months and one of the issues I faced was what mechanism to use so that our users could edit the content of some of the pages. I’ve been using Wordpress successfully for awhile now on this site, and it somehow popped into my head that I could also use Wordpress as a CMS, not just a blogging system. I blogged a couple days about how to get an unordered list of posts from WP. Now for how to use WP as a link manager and content editor.

Link manager

As usual, make sure you put this PHP snippet at the beginning of the non-wordpress page that will make calls to Wordpress

<?php require(‘path-to-wordpress-install/wp-blog-header.php’); ?>

In the Wordpress admin, take note of the ID number of the category you want to pull the links from.

Then place this PHP snippet in the non-wordpress page where you want the links to appear.

<ul class=”navlist”>
<?php get_links(2, ‘<li>’, “</li>”, “\n”, true, ‘name’, false); ?>
</ul>

Content Manager

Back in the WP admin area:

Create a new page

Enter a title

Enter your content in the editor

Turn off comments and pings if you so desire

Save the page and take note of the post slug. This will generally be the title in lowercase with the spaces removed from it.

On your non-wordpress PHP page:

<?php query_posts(‘pagename=postslug‘);
if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post();
the_content(“”);
endwhile; endif;
?>

This is working out great. Wordpress can easily be used as a link manager, cms, and publishing platform. I’ll post more as I discover more ways to utilize the system. If you have any Wordpress tips or tricks, share them in the comments.

This is a simple tip, mostly for myself, with hopes that it will help a future googler. To show the three most recent article titles from wordpress in a non-wordpress page, do the following:
index.php (non-wordpress PHP page)
<ul><?php include(“GetNews.php”); ?></ul>
GetNews.php
<?php
require(‘wp_directory/wp-blog-header.php’);
wp_get_archives(‘type=postbypost&limit=3&format=html’);
?>
Simple enough if you want to just show headlines with links to the post page.

Frustrated that you couldn’t save it? This is a great trick for online job apps, requests for information, or anytime your experience this dilemma. The easiest solution I’ve found it to install a third party PDF printer to print your file to. I recommend PDFcreator, this free open source PDF printer will allow you to print anything from Windows to a PDF document to save to your hard drive, email, or copy to CD. Just fill out your newly downloaded PDF form, type in your information, then print to the PDFcreator.
